Explaining Inflammatory Bowel Disease to Teens
Living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, is especially tough for teens. Pete Learns All About Crohn’s and Colitis is a full-color comic book that helps teens understand and learn to cope with IBD.
The story follows Pete, a middle-school-aged boy, as he learns what causes his gastrointestinal problems and adjusts to life with IBD. Readers will learn about experiencing IBD symptoms, going through diagnostic tests, dealing with symptoms at school and in social situations, explaining IBD to friends and teachers, working with the school nurse and other health care team members, and attending special camps for children with IBD. The comic book includes pages of crafts and activities, glossaries of IBD terms, and information about related medical issues.
This 32-page comic book is available free from the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, 386 Park Avenue South, 17th Floor, New York, NY 10016, 1–800–932–2423, www.ccfa.org.
